    Chicago hosted the 2008 U.S. Judo Federation Junior National Championships at the UIC Forum, 725 W. Roosevelt Road, on July 5 and 6. Among the hundreds of young judo competitors were many prospects for the 2012 and 2016 Olympic teams.

  • May Day March 2007

    A crowd of about 150,000 came out to participate in the May 1 immigration demonstration, which weaved through downtown and ended at Grant Park, where a massive rally was held. Organizer Jorge Mújica was pleased with the numbers: “I think that this year’s march was everything we expected and sends a very strong message to Washington. There needs to be some kind of immigration reform. If they don’t do it this year, next year there will be a half a million more.”

    On Wednesday, July 19, between 10,000 and 30,000 marched to display continued opposition to anti-immigrant legislation currently stalled in Congress. The turnout was considerably lower than May 1 rally, which drew about 400,000.
