Would the Real Oscar Torres Please Stand Up?

A short film producer from México, an actor in a Philippine drama and a member of the art department in the 2000 film “Amores Perros.” All of these men are different. All of them are named Oscar Torres and none of them are the Oscar Torres you should know.
Meet the real Oscar Torres, now known in the film industry as Oscar Torre. A regular on the CBS series “Cane,” which stars Jimmy Smits and Hector Elizondo, Torre changed his last name only a couple of years ago after his moniker caused a few problems in his career – www.imdb.com lists seven Oscar Torres in their Hollywood database.
“My real last name is Torres, with an s, but I haven’t used it because it started to create some real issues for me,” Torre, 39, told Extra during a phone interview. “I would have loved to use Torres, but I was missing some auditions because of it. Plus, I’m Cuban and in Cuba we don’t pronounce the s anyway.”
Since dropping the s, Torre says things have started to look up for him as an actor. His superstition kept him from going back to his original name once roles became abundant as Oscar Torre. Along with “Cane,” Torre is featured in the crime drama “Ladrón que Roba a Ladrón,” which was released on DVD Jan. 29.
“Even with the release of ‘Ladrón que Roba a Ladrón,’ someone wrote an article for the premiere of the film and under my name, put a picture of a different Oscar Torres,” Torre said.
Born in Miami, Fla., Torre studied psychology at the University of Miami and looked forward to becoming a chemical dependency counselor when he graduated. With these skills, he earned a job at a mental hospital where he worked ...
