Have you done your homework and ensured that your online presence is professional? If the answer is “no”, then don’t submit your résumé for that ideal job just yet.
Social and professional networking is a way for you to communicate and share information with individuals. This can be done in person as well as on the Internet. For example, many of us use Facebook and MySpace to keep our friends and family informed as to what’s been going on in our lives. It’s also quite possible that we may have uploaded pictures and videos of ourselves and our friends and our favorite music on those sites.
This might all seem harmless and fun to you, but be advised that a prospective employer could be looking at these sites before making hiring decisions. In fact, CareerBuilder.com reports that the majority (63 percent) of hiring managers who researched candidates on social networking sites did not hire the person based on what they found.
If all of your posts and pictures are positive and appropriate, then you can relax. However, if you have inappropriate, unprofessional text or pictures on your site, now is the time to edit. Get rid of those pictures of you and your friends drinking, partying and baring all (or most). Also, clean up the verbiage and grammar of the text. Therefore, basically anything that could be viewed as being irresponsible should be removed.
As the world becomes increasingly tech-savvy, future employers will be even more likely to check MySpace, Facebook and other social networking sites in order to determine what assets you may bring to the company as well as liabilities. Use these sources to your advantage. Remember, you are marketing yourself on these Web site so, make yourself look good.
Another social networking site that may get you noticed is LinkedIn. The site is geared more toward job seekers and professional networking and is also frequently reviewed by prospective employers. LinkedIn allows you to post information about yourself, much like a printed résumé. This includes your work history, education and career goals. Once you have registered, you can use the site to connect with others, and you also have the flexibility to research future employers, or even interviewers.
