César Chávez, a Mexican-American farm worker, is an icon for the Latino and civil rights community. He is the late founder and president of the United Farm Workers (UFW). He urged Mexican-Americans to register and vote and traveled throughout California to give speeches in support of workers’ rights.
To commemorate his life and achievement, National Louis University (NLU) honored individuals that reflect his legacy at the second annual César Chávez awards ceremony on March 31.
Ana María Soto, executive director of Latino initiatives at NLU, initated the César Chávez award. The award honors three indiviuals in three different categories: César E. Chávez Community Award, Latino Educator Award and Latino Student of the Year Award.
Dr. Vincent Allocco, president of El Valor, one of the largest nonprofit organizations in the U.S., received the César E. Chávez Community Award. He received the award for his continued commitment to provide access to education for children with disabilities and eliminating barriers to higher education for emerging leaders.
The Latino Educator Award was given to Juan Rangel, CEO of the United Neighborhood Organization (UNO) Charter School Network. He received the award for his dedication to bring high quality education to Latino neighborhoods.
The National-Louis Student of the Year award was given to Loretta Trevino. As a working mother, she has shown dedication and goes above and beyond in her studies. She is pursuing her Bachelor of Science degree in management.
March 31 marked the 82nd birthday of Chávez. Born in Yuma, Arizona, Chávez fought for social and economic justice in the community. He saw firsthand how California farm workers were exploited and fought for improved working conditions, living wages and other benefits.
