Claudio “The Emperador” Suárez visited Chicago to see the World Cup qualifiers for México with José Cuervo Traditional, while promoting the message of responsibility and discussing his career and future with Chivas USA.
“The truth is that there were problems to renew the contract and misunderstandings,” explained the Mexican soccer legend Suárez. “The misunderstanding was clarified. I would love to continue playing professionally and stay in Los Angeles; we arrived at an agreement quickly. I want to retire playing. After 20 years, I cannot leave soccer so easily.”
“The Emperador” has appeared in 178 international games. He is considered as one of the best defenders of all time in the history of México. He began to play soccer professionally in 1988. Now Suárez, who is 40, continues marching ahead.
“I believe that I am the only one of my generation that has not retired,” Suárez said. “[I want] to continue playing and I believe that I have one more year, but I want a couple of years. I believe that the surest thing is that I will finally retire from professional soccer.”
Suárez said there is no secret to playing for two decades.
“[We depend] on being in good health. Off the field you have to maintain an ordinary life so you can last on the field.”
Suárez will return to Chicago when Chivas USA play against the Chicago Fire on Oct. 22.
