The Rev. Wilfredo De Jesús Speaks out

Addresses comments on homosexuality and other 26th Ward concerns

The Rev. Wilfredo De Jesús said he was honored that Billy Ocasio, former 26th Ward Alderman and now senior advisor for Gov. Pat Quinn, recommended him to take his place as the next alderman.
De Jesús has been senior pastor of New Life Covenant Church for nine years. Some of the problems that De Jesús wants to continue to address – if elected as the next alderman – are the issues of violence, education, affordable housing and health.
“As a church we have tackled [those issues] on a small scale. On a larger scale, those are the things that I want to implement more,” De Jesús said. “Some of these things [Ocasio] has been doing for many years and I want to build upon that legacy he has left, and there are other things that we want to build upon.”
De Jesús said that several elected officials are supporting him to serve as the next alderman such as Miguel De Valle, Congressman Luis Gutiérrez, 30th Ward Alderman Ariel Reboyras, State Senator Iris Martínez and organizations such as Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation.
Another supporter is Juan Calderon, a resident of the 26th Ward and a gay Puerto Rican activist. Calderon disagrees with the comments published in the Windy City Times and other publications concerning De Jesús.
“The people that were commenting on the Rev. are not even a part of this community. They are not residents or constituents of this community. They have no say on who should be the next alderman,” Calderon said.
De Jesús said the article in the Windy City Times was taken out of context.
“I am not a homophobic. I am not a bigot. I have people in my church who come that are straight, gay, black, white [and] Hispanic,” ...
