In an interview with EXTRA, journalist and author Jorge Ramos spoke about his latest book Tierra de Todos: Nuestro Momento para Crear una Nación de Iguales. The book, which is now available in stores, takes a contemporary approach to a debate that is long overdue. Ramos once again hits the mark with this historically attune and gracefully written book.
EXTRA: What have you learned about yourself through the 10 substantially personal projects you have written?
Jorge Ramos: I’ve learned that I’m still an immigrant and I am fortunate to be living in a country where you can reinvent your life many times. The more I live in this country, the more surprised and amazed I am at all the possibilities that I have here that I didn’t have in my country of origin. I’ve learned to be hopeful and that hope could become change very quickly, something that you cannot say unfortunately about the rest of the world.
In your latest book, do you tell this tragic story to those opposed to immigration reform? It’s tragic that the most powerful and rich country in the world has an undercut. It’s tragic that we have 12 million people who are invisible to the rest. It’s tragic that in the Declaration of Independence, we get this wonderful comment that everyone is going to be treated equally, that men and women are created equal, and that is not happening. The purpose of the book is to face the fact that this country is not a country of equals, but that we can make it a country of equals.
