Prepare Now for Holiday Eating

The American Heart Association published a booklet with recipes for a variety of low-calorie dishes

The American Heart Association (AHA) has published a booklet titled, “Holiday Healthy Eating Tips & Recipes” including a recipe for spinach dip. The booklet has recipes for a variety of low-calorie dishes that can be served during the holidays.

The holidays will soon be here, and that means a lot of eating and drinking. This time of the year can cause problems for those already battling their weight. According to the American Obesity Association, at any given time, 40 percent of women and 25 percent of men are trying to lose weight.
The sight of the holiday food can definitely cause a temptation to those trying to maintain their weight or even lose weight through the holiday season. A study from the National Institutes of Health shows that people typically gain one pound during the holiday season, but that they don’t ever lose that pound, so that holiday weight gain accumulates over the years.
This year, the American Heart Association established Nov. 4 as “National Start! Eating Healthy Day.” They also published a booklet titled, “Holiday Healthy Eating Tips & Recipes.” The booklet has recipes for a variety of low-calorie dishes that can be served during the holidays: pomegranate splash drink, spinach dip, zucchini nut bread, scalloped potatoes, pork tenderloin with cranberry salsa and green beans with walnut gremolata and cheesecake dessert.
“If people think in advance about how they want to deal with their holiday eating, they can take actions that will help them curtail their eating,” said Dr. Haydee Muse, a senior medical director for Aetna in Chicago. “If you are really serious about not overeating, then perhaps you should eat something healthful before attending the party, just to fill your stomach, or perhaps drink several glasses of water. If you come to the party full, or partially full, your willpower will be stronger.”
