Many of us, who witness growing racism against undocumented immigrants, particularly from right-wing fanatics, feel relieved and vindicated that Lou Dobbs was finally let go from CNN.
Because Dobbs was a well-known anchor on the cable television network, he received $8 million to pull the plug on his show, “Lou Dobbs Tonight,” ending his anti-immigration-rants, which had led to a flood of complaints. I only wonder why CNN was slow to recognize that Dobbs had “gone wild,” and no longer reported accurate facts. Instead, he used his show as a personal platform to spread fear, hatred and lies about undocumented Mexican immigrants.
He blamed them for problems within unemployment, healthcare, the economy, and yes, – even the spread of diseases, leprosy being the latest.
Yet ironically, Dobbs, himself, is married to a Mexican-American. His wife, Debi Lee Segura, was born in México and her Mexican parents live with her and Dobbs. I can only assume that his wife is one of those self-loathing Latinas who hate their own and disown their roots. Maybe this is why Dobbs never mentioned his wife’s ethnicity on his show.
But she has support here in Chicago.
Rosanna Pulido founded the Illinois Minutemen, a self-proclaimed anti-immigrant group that claims to fight to keep the undocumented out of the U.S. Not surprisingly, Pulido, an American Hispanic and Illinois’ native, has appeared on Dobb’s former show. She says she’s a recognized expert on the consequences of immigration, such as the loss of jobs and the burdening of taxpayers by $3.5 million. Undocumented immigrants hurt American workers and legal immigrants, she says on her Web site: rosannapulido2010.com/category/issues/illegal-immigration.
I wonder where she gets her numbers.
According to national organizations, due to many unknown factors, it is impossible to determine if such a loss exists.
I guess Pulido has conducted better national research. Even better, she says that since 9/11, a total of 46,000 Americans have died at the hands of illegal immigrants.
This I had not heard. She must really be an expert, just like Dobbs.
But my favorite is that American taxpayers are so financially burdened by paying for immigrants’ free social services, that the country is now bankrupt.
If only Washington figured this out, our recession would disappear. Unfortunately, Dobbs may be gone from CNN, but he still has many supporters, including some Hispanics.
