International Mexican player Cuauhtémoc Blanco greets Chicago in a press conference, trains with his teammates, and scores his first goal with the Fire in a friendly game with Glasgow, Scotland’s Celtic.
Appearing full of optimism, smiling and upbeat, the Mexican international player Cuauhtémoc Blanco was presented in a press conference before Chicago’s sports journalists to proclaim to the four winds that he comes with a winning mentality and that he will work with anyone in reach to achieve triumph for the Chicago Fire. In the press conference Club President John Guppy showed his happiness with the arrival of the player who, after his participation on the Mexican national team in the Copa de Oro and Copa America, is now fulfilling his contract and officially joining the Fire with an initial 1.5-season agreement with the option for a second season. Jose Manuel Saenz, Blanco’s agent, told Extra: “Cuauhtémoc is excited. He really likes the city, he likes the team, and he is very motivated to play immediately. He comes to work and to demonstrate his international-level playing skills. As any player has stress, his recent outings with the Mexican team made him sorry to not be able to join the Chicago team sooner. We all know that it was because of his commitment to Mexico; at the time it worried him, but he’s here now.” Last week, in the annex field at Toyota Park, Blanco put in his first training session with his Chicago Fire teammates, looking optimistic and full of energy.
The goal, the difference Fortune couldn’t have been any better, since Blanco scored his first goal Sunday in his debut with the Fire. At 30 minutes of play in the friendly international game against Scotland’s Celtic, he faked out the defensive line and the goalie, putting in the first goal of the game. Finally, the Celtic team evened the scorecard for a final 1-1 tie. So, the “Fire Eagle” raises the grand expectations among Chicago’s soccer fans. Hopes have been elevated since big hirings in the MLS like Blanco’s and the Los Angeles Galaxy’s signing of soccer superstar David Beckham.
