Soccer inspires such a passion in its fans that in one occasion it even provoked a war between two Central American countries. In the case of Amanda Campos, a newly graduated student of Valparaiso High School, sports inspired her to excel in every aspect of life.
The 18-year-old youth is former captain of her school’s soccer team. She thinks that sports have cultivated her leadership, patience and understanding. Her love for soccer has granted her numerous recognitions. Campos also considers a priority helping her community as a volunteer in the food pantry and teaching English to ESL students during her summer vacations.
Recently, Campos was honored with the Hispanic Heritage Regional Sports Youth Award Gold Medal. Every year, the Hispanic Heritage Awards Foundation, based in Washington, D.C., and Subway restaurants grants this honor to notable student-athletes of Hispanic background. The prize consists of a $3,000 university scholarship and the opportunity of competing at a national level for another $5,000.
“I am pleased to win this prize,” Campos said. “This confirms that all the effort in the last four years was not in vain, and that if we dedicate ourselves to work at the best possible, good things happen to us. I want to thank the Hispanic Heritage Awards Foundation and Subway restaurants for this honor, that will help me to study fashion business courses.”
Tab Ramos is a winner of 2005 Hispanic Heritage Sports Award and is proud of Hispanic youth such as Campos, who is able to excel in sports and studies.
“It is encouraging to see how the leaders of the future succeed in and out the classroom,” Ramos said. “Subway restaurants have a solid commitment of helping the Hispanic community, as well as the active lifestyle.”
