We have all stood in front of a gray, rectangular box that has a keypad and monitor that looks ancient. We take our plastic rectangular card and swipe the magnetic strip. We take our cash and walk away. What went wrong?

You were robbed! And I’m not talking about the transaction fee. Millions of dollars have been stolen in simple ATM transactions. Thieves are now more sophisticated. You don’t just have to watch out for the suspicious character anymore; now you have to decide where to make a transaction.

Millions of dollars were stolen from Citibank in March, when thieves hacked into the ATM transaction-processing firm and collected the pin numbers from cards used in 7-Eleven stores.

I know someone that made a purchase online and had $15,000 stolen. The bank told her that the thieves physically made a credit card with the same information. The hackers ended up buying $15,000 worth of furniture. How is this possible? What happens to the items you purchase?

Private investigators revealed that Internet hackers steal your account information and purchase random items at different Web sites. These sites are usually fraudelent and accept any type of transactions. Private investigators set up a Web site on purpose, to track the transactions.

They found that the items were shipped to homes in the U.S. The person that receives the item ships the merchandise abroad. From that point on it is unknown what happens to it. Interesting enough, private investigators found that the people involved in the shipping thought they were doing a favor for their Internet business partner. In other words, the ...
