Soccer star prepares for another season

FC Barcelona star Rafael Márquez spoke in a teleconference interview as a preview of this summer’s “FC Barcelona on Tour USA ’08.” Marquez touched on Ronaldinho’s departure from the team and talked about the rebuilding of a new era of Barcelona with new coach Pep Guardiola. The legendary Spanish club will take on the Chivas de Guadalajara at Soldier Field on Aug. 3 at 7:30 p.m.



Teleconference Interview: The last time Barcelona was here, it had a distinctly different roster. Can you comment on the roster changes and how they will affect the team in the upcoming season?

Rafael Márquez: There are players who left that were part of the team who came a few years back. However, now there are others who have joined us and we will benefit from their arrival. The only difference is there is a much more intense preparation now that we have a new coach.

TC: You are one of the remaining pillars of the team after the departures of Deco and Ronaldinho. What can we expect of Barcelona with the start of the tour through the U.S.?

RM: My intention is to give my best because I am one of those who stayed. I was there at the start of one project and [now] we are starting another. The responsibility to succeed fall[s] on me as one of the team’s veteran players.

TC: Was it difficult watching Ronaldinho leave the team or do you feel it had to happen?

RM: It was hard not only with Ronaldinho but also with Deco and Giovanni dos Santos. They were my teammates and good friends. They all have new challenges and new goals. Now they will defend other teams and I will defend mine.
