Avoid Career Scams

The lack of jobs on the market is stirring much concern about career scams. These usually include employment or career related schemes job seekers should be aware of and take steps to avoid.

In a scheme, companies try to sell you products or services attempting to collect your personal information to sell to a third party that will in turn try to market their product or services to you. In most of these scams, the company will try and trick or entice you into purchasing services you don’t need or into giving out confidential information that should always remain private such as social security number, bank account information, etc.

Career consulting scams can easily happen to any unsuspecting jobseeker. A “career consultant” who is impressed with your résumè and would like to represent you may contact you. You may be interested in their marketing, résumè writing and reviews or other career-related services. Naturally, a person who has been out of work for a time may find it helpful to learn what they are doing right or wrong in their job searches.

Recruiting scams may include instances where a recruiter contacts you saying they have clients seeking individuals with your qualifications although there are no positions at this time. They will ask you to send your résumè to them “should they receive a job order.” Once the résumè has been received, you are told that participating in training sessions they offer for a fee can enhance your candidacy.

Bait and switch scams have you apply for a job and you are subsequently selected for an interview. During the interview you discover that the job you applied for does not exist and the company is trying to interest you in a completely different position that they are ...
