Authentic Peruvian cuisine at Machu Picchu Restaurant
Two of the delicious dishes found at Machu Picchu, a Peruvian restaurant in Chicago's North Side. Ceviche (top) and choros a la chalaca (bottom.)
It is rare to find a location that has elegance, modesty and an eye for knowing what people like. It is even more rare to find one with all of these elements combined. Machu Picchu Restaurant is that place.
Don’t be fooled by its simple exterior. Upon entering Machu Picchu, one is immediately taken aback by the vivid atmosphere, giving it the perfect blend of elegance and modesty.
Peruvian born brothers Javier, Roberto and Marco Alday took over the restaurant in 2008 and began the difficult challenge of running a business. Together, they made adjustments to the menu and revamped the restaurant, with the exception of the floor to ceiling photomurals of Perú.
“People love these murals,” Javier said. “Sometimes we see people take pictures with poses that make it seem like they are climbing Machu Picchu. It makes us feel good because not only do we provide them with a meal [but also] give them a unique dining experience.”
One of the most popular items on the menu is Lomo Saltado, sirloin steak strips sautéed with onions, tomatoes and french fries and served with white rice. Another item is the Chicha Morada, a Peruvian drink that consists of extract of purple corn with clove and cinnamon that some would say is reminiscent of punch. It is more than just punch; but don’t take my word for it, go try it yourself and see where this experience takes you.
