Argentinean writer and director Florencia Manovil discusses ‘Fiona’s Script’

Movie buffs recently attended the 28th Annual Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, Reeling. The festival took place from Nov. 5 to 15 at several Chicago theatres. This year’s festival featured 59 movies including two full-length films in Spanish, and five short films as well as other movies produced by Latino filmmakers.

One of the films screened was “Fiona’s Script,” a movie about a Latina woman struggling to finish her script and coping with her recent breakup with her boyfriend, Sebastián. In the film, Fiona meets a woman who helps her come back to the real world and shortly after, sparks fly between them. Sebastián then decides to return, and Fiona must decide whom she will end up with and how her script will end.

During a recent visit to Chicago, Argentinean writer and director Florencia Manovil discussed aspects of the film ‘Fiona’s Script’ and future projects.



What message do you want people to walk away with after they see your film?

Florencia Manovil: The concept of love as coming from within [and] not externally is definitely something I hope to continue to explore. It is a big problem for most people, especially young women, that sort of idea that it is derived from others, as opposed to one’s self. It is realizing the whole idea that you can’t love anybody until you love yourself.

The movie does not follow a traditional story line; it switches from a dream state to reality. How did that idea come about?
