Make an impact on your community and your career
logging in volunteer hours. As long as you are doing a good job, an employer will certainly look favorably upon a candidate who is already familiar with the mission, policies and programs that the organization has to offer. Your dedication is apparent before the first interview even takes place.
Create your own opportunity
You don’t need have to volunteer with an established organization to make a difference; you can also work independently to address a need that you see in your community. For example, with the economic downturn, it has become more difficult for families to provide some basic staples such as food and warm clothing. Recognizing the need, you can organize your own clothing or food drive in conjunction with your neighbors, your church or local businesses. All donations can then be dropped off to local shelters and/or food banks. You will not only do a great thing for your community, but you have also given yourself another entry for your résumé having proven your communication and event planning skills.
For volunteer opportunities and other ways to upgrade your job skills, call the National Latino Education Institute at (773) 247-0707. Nationally accredited vocational programs such as bilingual medical assistant, medical office specialist, business development and office technology training are offered. NLEI also provides adult learning programs such as GED preparation and English as a second language classes. NLEI is also in need of volunteers.
