Terry O’Brien is one of several Democratic candidates running for Cook County Board President in the 2010 primary election. As president of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District, he has worked with the people of Cook County, elected officials and local governments. In an interview with EXTRA on Dec. 31, 2009, O’Brien gave an overview of his platform if he is elected.
EXTRA: What will you do different if you win the Democratic primary for Cook County Board President?
Terry O’Brien: I have been at the Water Reclamation District for 21 years. During that time, we refunded money to taxpayers and our bond rating has been triple A. I came in under a mess and tried to resurrect our name in Washington D.C. and Springfield. Now, the sales tax problem is huge. Todd Stroger was suppose to put a freeze on hiring when he passed this sales tax issue, but he continues to hire at six figure salaries.
We have had a 30 percent reduction in our workforce at Water Reclamation. People are hired at our agency for what they know, not who they know. You must implement a process to hire people for qualification.
