Why Your Vote Matters
A closer look at how this primary election affects Latinos

Cook County Board President

While the races for Senate and State Representative have a concrete idea of what is at stake – such as immigration rights and federal laws – this race is different. The issues here are less about race and equally as important.



The main issue is taxes. Among major cities, Chicago has the highest sales tax in the country, at 10.25 percent, and this affects any person who earns a dollar in Cook County.

This race is imperative to the Latino community because it means choosing a person who will represent the needs of an essentially lower-income bracket.



Cook County Assessor

The assessor race is extremely important for the Hispanic community because of its affect on the value of one’s property. The assessor holds an enormous amount of power in its responsibility to price the value of residential, commercial and industrial property. It is important for Latinos to vote for a person that will represent their interests and price the value of their property in a fair and worthy way. By voting in this race, Latinos are working to solidify a better environment for the generations to come.



Cook County Board Commissioner, 7th and 8th District

The race for commissioner at the local level is extremely important because it deals with the affairs of taxes. Hispanics who choose to stay in the U.S. and begin a family will eventually one day buy a home. The Cook County Board Commissioner is the person that deals with property taxes. Latinos should vote in the race for commissioner to ensure that their American dream does not dissolve because of their inability to pay property taxes. There must ...
