What would you do about the hospitals, in particular Oak Forest? We have heard there is a bloated staff and few patients.

Oak Forest was a long-term care facility and patients were moved to nursing homes. Its function then diminished, but there was no diminishment in the staff. In the public health care system, we have one staff person for every four patients. In the private health care system there is one staff for every eight patients. That number makes you wonder if the county is operating as efficient as it should be. The health care dollars spent are one out of every $3 and what has been done is operate on it with a scalpel instead of an ax.



There are no trauma units south of 95th Street. How would you address this?

Trauma care is a real issue; neither of the two major hospitals in my community have them. It is extraordinarily expensive. It is a concern of mine. The independent health government board should make the decisions, not the politicians.



What about the old Cook County Hospital facility, what do you want to do with it? Renovate, preserve or demolish?

Preserve the exterior and renovate the interior; we need medical offices.



Where would the money come from?

In this administration in Washington, there is a real commitment to health care, and we should look to them. The county hasn't been active in pursuing grants.



Why is that the county doesn't go after federal resources?
