Less of a Mega Fight: Pacman vs. Clottey

by Eduardo Lozano | trad. Victor Flores

After months and months of waiting, the fight few boxing fans are really excited about is finally here: the pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao (Pacman) will face Joshua Clottey at Cowboys Stadium on March 13th.

Any honest boxing fan would say they preferred to see Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Pacquiao. This was supposed to be the mega fight of the century. It is a rarity to see two world-class fighters square off at the peak of their careers and that fight wouldn’t have been for a world title, but rather to determine who the real pound-for-pound king really is. Both sides generate boxing biggest payday in history and keep the sport ahead of MMA. But now we are left with Pacman and Clottey.

It’s not that Clottey is a bad fighter, but he’s definitely not Mayweather. The fight won’t be easy for Pacquiao by any means. Clottey is a great technical fighter and he beat Miguel Cotto on my scorecard. He withstood a barrage of punishment from Antonio Margarito and has impressive wins over Zab Judah and Diego Corrales on his résumé. He has only three losses and has never been knocked out. But knowing Freddie Roach, Pacman will be ready for this fight.

The Pacquiao-Mayweather Jr. fight has not been completely ruled out, and there is the possibility the final details will be ready by fall. There are some fights you live for and there is no doubt that this would be one of the greatest bouts. Both sides need to compromise and sign the dotted line. It would be a tragedy to boxing fans everywhere if this bout never happens.
