We often learn about the many attributes of our emerging and talented younger generation of workers, including the Millennials, Generation Y and X, in terms of their value and potential investment in our global workforce. However, the Baby Boomer generation continues to strongly influence the workplace.
Over the next 10 years, as the population ages, over one-third of the workforce will be composed of people ages 55 and older. A recent study by the Urban Institute indicated that, while unemployment reaches record highs, the number of mature workers (ages 50 and older) has increased.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), nearly one in five workers is classified as a mature worker – the highest statistics since 1948. Across the world, people are working longer. This trend will continue to change traditional workplace environments, as the diversity of multiple generations will have a historical impact on the dynamics of overall employment.
Latinos represent one of the fastest growing populations of mature workers. According to the Urban Institute’s study, “50+ Hispanic Workers: A Growing Segment of the U.S. Workforce,” Latino mature workers will make up six percent of workers ages 50 to 69 by the year 2020. In fact, the BLS said that this number would quadruple by 2050 indicating that one in four workers would be Latino.
Every year, CareerBuilder conducts a nationwide survey of employers. At the end of last year, one-third of the respondents indicated that those employees nearing retirement requested permission to remain at their job. In the previous year, the same survey found that only one in four made such a request. Last year, less than one in four employers made similar requests.
