Tax Filing Mistakes

Photo : Brian Herzog
Make no mistake: simple slip-ups can slow the tax return filing process. Don’t make errors in the race to April 15 that cause overpayments to the IRS or delayed refunds. Save time and money by avoiding these common missteps:

• Selecting the wrong filing status (single, married, head of household, etc.)

• Claiming ineligible dependents

• Transposing Social Security number(s) or mixing up names and Social Security numbers

• Forgetting to submit required documentation, such as W-2s

• Transposing numbers or making math errors

• Failing to claim or miscalculating important tax breaks, such as the Making Work Pay Tax Credit, the Homebuyer Credit or the Child Tax Credit

• Not signing the tax return – both spouses must sign joint returns, and professional tax preparers must sign returns

• Mailing the return to the wrong IRS office

• Waiting until the last minute to e-file with tax preparation software – don’t let high Internet traffic result in missing the filing deadline

Taxpayers who aren’t sure about their 2009 return or wonder if past returns contain errors can have them reviewed by an H&R Block tax professional. Tax returns can be amended for the past three years.
