Voiceover acting is practically its own industry in Hollywood today. From animated TV shows and movies to commercial work for various products and narration, many actors in the business rely solely on his or her voice to make a living. If an actor can find a niche in the business, chances are they can land more gigs if the performances are what studios are looking for.
So has been the case for Ricardo Tejedo, 37, a Latino voiceover actor who dubs American movie roles into Spanish for Spanish-speaking audiences. This includes roles for three-time Academy Award-nominated actor Johnny Depp.
Born in México City, Tejedo says he has been doing voiceover work since he was 5 years old. His debut into the film industry came in 1983 when he translated Emmy Award-winning actor Peter Strauss’s role into Spanish for “Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone.”
Since then, Tejedo has lent his voice to numerous TV and movie roles including: Capt. Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) in TV’s “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” Capt. Hans Solo (Harrison Ford) for special edition DVDs of “Star Wars” and Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) in “Night at the Museum.”
In 1993, Tejedo got the opportunity to do a voiceover role for Depp’s performance in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.” Tejedo says he did so well, he was invited to voiceover Depp’s roles in more of his films. Since “Grape,” Tejedo has worked on the entire “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy as Capt. Jack Sparrow as well as Depp’s most recent performance as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.”
During an interview with EXTRA, Tejedo discussed the challenges of performing roles like Sparrow and the Mad Hatter and tells us which actor he would like to do voiceover work for if
