La Liguilla Keeps Rolling

by Antonio Zurita

The fifth week of the Apertura 2010 gave Mexican soccer fans plenty to talk about. From changes in coaching and goals scored, here’s a complete recap:

A change of arms
This is the second week in a row that a team is left without a head coach and not because of lack of points. José Luis Sánchez Solá “El Chelis” threw in the towel as coach of Puebla simply because he strongly dislikes Ricardo Henaine, one of the team’s owners.

A few years back, Henaine had legal and financial issues with Francisco Bernal, a team stockholder. Henaine gathered some legal documents and had Bernal arrested. After he was released, he was forced to give up 51 percent of his stock.

It seems like the loss of their coach affected the team, Pumas slaughtered Puebla with a score of 4-1.

Rebaño Sagrado?
Las Chivas del Guadalajara began its week by losing the final of Copa Libertadores 3-1 versus Internacional of Brazil. Later in the week, when the team played Potros del Atlante, it lost 2-1 after Edgar Mejía was expelled from the game in the 5’ of play.

Other results
Rayados del Monterrey was ready to celebrate its 2-1 win over Tuzos del Pachuca when Daniel Arreola scored the equalizing goal in the 90’. Tecos had home field advantage and defeated Glariadores del San Luis 3-2. It seems like there is new life in Tigres as the team keeps accumulating points. This week it played Santos and won 1-0. Toluca found its first victory by defeating Zorros del Atlas 1-0. Cementeros of Cruz Azul also defeated Jaguares de Chiapas 3-1. Las Águilas del Ámerica continue to play poorly, but won its game against Gallos Blancos del Querétaro 1-0.
