A Search for Mexicanidad Throughout 200 Years

For México, 2010 not only symbolizes the bicentenary of its struggle for independence from Spain, it also marks the 100th year of the Mexican Revolution, which represents a victory for the indigenous and the working class.

These two Mexican rebellions against an oppressor created a search of identity, symbols, myths and concepts to define its identity as a homeland and a nation. México has a mestizo identity within coexisting multicultural and multiethnic societies, thus, forging its Mexicanidad.

As in most countries, the character and personality of a Mexican is based on the perception of the word “nation” or nationalist sentiment. This could be called their cultural identity – the territory, the government system, the historic past as well as traditions and customs. Mexican patriotism could derivate from this term in the same manner, which makes a reference to the actions that reflect love and loyalty to their country, showing respect to the flag and national anthem or in extreme cases,
to defend and die for their homeland.

The México 2010 celebration is intended to highlight a multicultural entity, rich in traditions, colored by its folklore, its scenic and plastic arts and its architectonic beauty that reflects every stage of this country. Nevertheless, Mexicans celebrate the nostalgia of their ideals, a free and sovereign country as well as the courage, honor and bravery of their heroes and who once dreamed of intellectual justice and social equality because although they have found their identity, they are still tested as a nation.
