“The Independence and the Revolution are founding moments of Mexico that makes us who we are today.” This is how Mexican president Felipe Calderón Hinojosa expressed himself during his fourth state of the union address on Sept. 2 in Mexico City. He asked his fellow citizens to join him in framing an optimistic situation and to work together in overcoming disagreements.
“Today we have a strong and dynamic country. México’s promising future is based solely on the strength of its citizens,” added Calderón.
In addition, he reiterated that this generation has the opportunity to change México in a peaceful way by defeating inertias and resistances. This profound and substantial change could make a strong, fair, prosper, safe, clean, free and democratic México.
Furthermore, Calderón said it’s time for profound change. It’s time to accept risks and accept the costs that they imply. The great changes in México’s history were achieved by having a goal and strategy, but overall with unity and generosity.
México’s president ended his address with an immutable certainty saying that although combating delinquency and drug trafficking would not be easy, it was possible. He added that by taking these measures, the Mexican people would finally have that peace they long for. This way, it will also be possible to eliminate extreme poverty and achieve universal healthcare coverage.
