Smartphones bring the world to your cell phone, but some people are more focused on what’s happening in their own backyards.
If the local scene is your preference, there are plenty of applications in the Android marketplace that can help you keep track of people, places and things in your immediate surroundings.
“Of the more than 80,000 applications available for Android-powered phones, a great portion of them can be used to get info about local attractions and businesses,” said Derek Estes, director of sales for U.S. Cellular in Chicago. “We know our customers are busy and deserve to have data at their fingertips while staying connected to those who matter most.”
U.S. Cellular suggests these applications to “go local” with your smartphone:
Gowalla
This application can be loaded on a Blackberry or Android-powered device. It helps you keep up with friends, share places to go and discover attractions in your city, state and beyond.
Around Me
This application allows you to find information about your surroundings and identifies your GPS position quickly. Locate nearby points of interest such as restaurants, hotels, theaters, parking and much more.
Yelp
Yelp users can get reviews of local hot spots by residents who live near them. Review your city or other areas and report or “yelp” about your experience while finding out what visitors have to say about key attractions in your area.
