Latino Art Beat, a national nonprofit arts organization, received over 1,000 entries in its 13th consecutive art competition, themed “What Hispanic Heritage & Culture Means to Me?”
Students, in 11th and 12th grade, from high schools in Illinois, Houston, Los Ángeles, Miami and Washington, D.C., participated in the 2010 national art competition. The Mayor’s Office, the local Department of Education along with dedicated logistical partners, present this milestone competition annually. Each region selected a first, second and third place winner along with several honorable mentions. Of all the first place regional winners, a national winner is chosen.
This year’s first place Illinois and 2010 National art competition winner is Jesus Ramon Hernández, a June 2010 graduate of Carl Schurz High School. He attends Robert Morris University (RMU) on a $22,000 Latino Art Beat / RMU scholarship partnership.
Hernández’ artwork entitled “Conquista para la Paz”, an oil painting depicting a battle scene commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Mexico’s Revolution. Four additional Illinois students were awarded scholarships to attend Columbia College Chicago as well as scholarships to students attending the Illinois Institute of Art.
“The Latino Art Beat 13th Annual Awards Ceremony was a moving experience for all those that attended. We awarded and recognized all the Illinois art and film competition winners in front of a packed audience at Columbia College’s Stage Two Center,” said Don Rossi Nuccio, president of Latino Art Beat.
Attendees at the event included: a dance performance by Linda’s Dance Studio, a Chicago blues performance by Ph1l and the Great Energy Transfer, MC and Fox News reporter Anita Padilla and Manny Flores, Chairman of the Illinois Commerce Commission, who gave the keynote address.
