Grammy Award winner Vikki Carr has been performing in Chicago since she burst upon the scene in 1960.
“I am excited to come back to Chicago. It is one of the first cities that embraced me as a performing artist and every time I return, it deepens my love for the musical spirit of this amazing city,” Carr said. “I can’t believe it’s been this long since I’ve been in Chicago and I’m planning a special show that celebrates the best of my five decades singing for my fans.”
Carr is celebrating 50 years as an artist this year. Throughout her career, she has won three Grammy Awards, released over 60 recordings, and performed for the Queen of England, five U.S. presidents and sold-out audiences around the world. She has worked in radio, television, film and theater. Her music embraces two languages and she is among the first artists to bridge the cultures of the U.S. and Latin America, paving the way for many performers today.
She commemorates her milestone career and produced a 50th anniversary album with mariachi master José Hernández and his Mariachi Sol de Mexico. The recording includes new songs as well as recognizable standards featuring string and vocal arrangements by Hernández.
Born in El Paso, Texas, and raised in Southern California, Carr, the eldest of seven children, began performing at age 4. She recorded “He’s a Rebel” which first became a hit in Australia. That title was soon followed by the unforgettable release, “It Must Be Him”. One year later, the single was released in the U.S. and earned Carr three Grammy Award nominations. The song was featured in the Academy Award winning movie “Moonstruck”.
