Empower Your Career Choice

Our career choice is based on what we believe fits our personality. Nothing is more disappointing than taking a job and learning that it isn’t right for you. If you are making a career change, research will be your key to success.

To help broaden your perspective, explore a variety of different sources.

Use the Internet to gain contacts, join professional association networks, read message boards and attend career fair.

Below are some tips to get you started on a career choice that you will love:

Seek objective information
For instance, what are the qualifications required, availability of work, duties and salary scale and job outlook? Use the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (bls.gov). Browse through professional journals at your local library. Ask a librarian for other helpful occupational resources.

Career fairs
They should provide information on job availability, an opportunity to network, as well a chance to gain information from human resources professionals.

Seek out and listen to individuals who are in the field
Ask them about a typical day at work. What are the life-style implications? And ask them for honest criticism of the job and what makes them overlook job challenges. Also ask how they broke into the field.

Go and see for yourself
Shadow a friend or network contact for a day. Volunteer or seek temporary positions or short-term jobs. Prior experience within the day-to-day operations is priceless. Evaluate the work environment and see if it fits your personality and if it is worth you putting your all into that career.

Career information should come from reliable sources that strive for objectivity and provide a balance to promotional materials or gripes about a career-occupation. Research is a wise investment of your time ...
