2011 starts off with strong Latino representation in film. Here’s a look at some of the films featuring Latino talent being released in January and February:
“The Green Hornet”
Cameron Diaz (“Knight and Day”), Oscar nominee Edward James Olmos (“Stand and Deliver”), and Edward Furlong (TV’s “CSI: NY”), star in this superhero film about the son of a wealthy newspaper publisher who becomes a crime fighter after his father is killed. Opens Jan. 14.
“The Rite”
Alicia Braga (“Predators”), who is Brazilian, tests her faith in this horror film set in the Vatican where a seminary student and a priest attempt to save people’s souls by performing exorcisms. Opens Jan. 28.
“Biutiful”
Directed by Mexican filmmaker Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu (“Babel,” “Amores Perros”), the melodrama stars Spanish Oscar winner Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men”) as a terminally ill man who must find inner peace with his family and himself before he dies. Limited release Jan. 28.
“From Prada to Nada”
Based on Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility,” this comedy romance features a cast full of Hispanic talent including Oscar nominee Adriana Barraza (“Babel”), Wilmer Valderrama (“Fast Food Nation”), Kuno Becker (“From Mexico with Love”), Alexa Vega (“Spy Kids”), and Camilla Belle (“Push”). Opens Jan. 28.
“Cedar Rapids”
Filmmaker Miguel Arteta (“Youth in Revolt”), who is of Peruvian and Spanish descent, directs a comedy that follows a naïve insurance agent (Ed Helms of “The Hangover”) who goes to Iowa for a convention. Limited release Feb. 11.
“Unknown”
Spanish-born director Jaume Collet-Serra (“Orphan”) heads this action thriller about a man (Liam Neeson) who wakes up in the hospital after an accident to find someone has stolen his identity. Opens Feb. 18.
