Emanuel’s victory celebration

A diverse crowd of approximately 2,000 people congregated at Plumbers’ Union Local 130 Hall, 1340 W. Washington Blvd., to celebrate Rahm Emanuel’s victory as the next mayor of Chicago Feb. 22.

Next to the stage a projector that featured a map of Chicago highlighted in blue the progress of the votes. Many people who have supported or volunteered for Emanuel’s mayoral campaign cheered in excitement as the elections results rolled in Emanuel’s favor.

The program included comments from supporters including Juan Rangel, UNO’s CEO, who co-chaired Emanuel’s mayoral campaign. Secretary of State Jesse White and U.S. Representative for the 5th Congressional district Mike Quigley were also in attendance.

Emanuel was promptly proclaimed the winner within one hour after the polling places closed, taking 55 percent of the vote. There will be no run-off in April.

Prior to his victory speech, Emanuel walked from behind the stage in hand with his daughter Leah. His wife Amy Rule, daughter Ilana, son Zack and Emanuel’s parents were also by his side.

Emanuel said he looks forward to work with the aldermen to move this city forward and address its challenges.

“I want to reach out tonight to the members of the next City Council. We have a chance for a new partnership that will serve our city and its taxpayers well. So thank you, Chicago, for this vote of confidence in our future.”

The celebration concluded as a mob of photographers followed Emanuel’s direction as he greeted supporters in the crowd.
