Seems like it’s probably too little too late for the White Sox heading into tonight’s three game series against the 1st place Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. Logic tells us the inconsistent 2011 season won’t suddenly change over the course of one month. In a season full of unexpected let-downs and swirling doubts looking ahead to next year, the Sox would need a miraculous final month to sneak into the playoffs.
September baseball though has seen crazier things before. The infamous 1969 September Cubs melt-down saw them lose 17 out of 25 games and give up their 1st place spot to the eventual World Series champs New York Mets. The 2005 World Series champs White Sox also come to mind as they nearly lost their season-long 1st place standing to the Cleveland Indians who were only 1 ½ behind as late as September 20th.
It would seem that Manager Ozzie Guillen and General Manager Kenny Williams, will need a disastrous finish by the Tigers and a miraculous run by the underachieving Sox. In the very immediate short-run, however, a memorable September would at least quiet the now-more-visible Guillen-Williams saga. With Guillen in his eighth year and Williams in his eleventh year, the two fierce personalities are no strangers to being paired with the club’s successes and disappointments. Given the likelihood of missing the playoffs for a third consecutive year, Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, who already shopped around Guillen this past winter in a possible deal to the Florida Marlins, is seemingly content to part ways with Guillen.
Knowing that his tenure is possibly expiring, Guillen pointed out on Tuesday, “If Jerry wants me back, I'm more than happy to be back. If he's not, nothing's going to change. Obviously, I'm going to be sad, because I'd leave the town and the team I love."
That Guillen is somehow resigned to some fabricated uncertainty that awaits him after the season is definitely not the case. There’s plenty of savvy and bravado behind the 47-year old throwback manager who knows he’ll have a team to lead regardless if management honors his final year under contract.
In spite of the obvious uncertainties, Guillen can look to AAA Charlotte call-up’s Alejandro De Aza, Tyler Flowers and slugger Dayan Viciedo to providing the continued, “get it done or sit down” shake-up that’s kept them in the hunt. With this
