Not goodbye, just so long

I’ve always said that baseball is a business, and you have to make moves and changes at the right moments in order to go ahead for the benefit of everyone.

It is not easy to write this column in these moments, when a lot of things are passing through my head and around my life.

Managing the Chicago White Sox during the eight seasons I have has been one of the best experiences that I’ve had as a professional and as a person. That’s because I am from Chicago after having spent 22 of my 47 years of life here.

I know that many people will wonder why I asked the White Sox to let me go if I love this organization that gave me the opportunity, first to play in the Big Leagues, and then, to become a manager, so much. I want you all to understand that one has always to look after his family and their future.

I don’t know if you remember that some months ago I said that I’d like a contract extension that would give me stability for the coming years. Well, that did not happen so I preferred to see what my options were outside of the White Sox.

More than anyone else, I would have liked to finish the season managing my team and not having to leave with only two games left, but things are like that in this business.

The decision was very hard, don’t you think this is something easy for me. I am still trying to get used to the idea that I will no longer be managing my team, that I will no longer share with my players or my coaches, who in some cases, during eight years, were a bit more ...
