Discover Durango’s natural beauty

With its legendary dawn and sunsets, exceptional forests or deserts views and beautiful rivers and lagoons, Durango boasts some of the most spectacular landscapes in the country, allowing visitors to enjoy every type of getaway, from the most peaceful rest to extreme emotions.

A case in point is the Sierra Madre Occidental, which offers visitors extraordinary natural landscapes, where visitors can enjoy activities such as hunting, fishing, trekking and rappel, as well as have the opportunity to stay in comfortable cabins with a view to the amazing mountain range.

One of the most beautiful places within this mountain range is Puentecillas, a small lake set among forrest- filled mountains and surrounded by cabins. Located near El Salto, on the 22 kilometer on the Salto-Pueblo Nuevo highway, it is home to the Santa Barbara natural reserve, where ancient native species, including 150 year old pines, exist.

The impressive waterfalls are also worth noting. Some of them, reaching a height of almost 300 feet, include El Salto de Agua Llovida, in the Nayar mountain range, and the Cascada del Tecolote, in the Vencedores town, as well as the awe-inspiring La Joya waterfall, located in the Mexquital municipality.

There are other protected natural areas near the city of Durango, such as the town of Otinapa and El Tecuán national park. This protected natural area, surrounded by coniferous trees and small creeks, is located only 36 miles (59 kilometers) west of the capital city.

In contrast, Durango boasts the mystery of the desert. The Sierra del Sarnoso, located in the northern section of the state, is the only mountain range with colorful rocks that range from red to yellow.
