Canteca de Macao delivers exceptional sound in “Nunca es Tarde”

by Christina E. Rodriguez | trad. Víctor Flores

Cumbia, salsa, rock, jazz and reggae, Canteca de Macao does it again in their new album “Nunca Es Tarde,” set to be released Feb. 7.

You have to admit-- Cumbia is not the first thing you think about when you hear about a Flamenco band from Madrid. But Canteca de Macao opens the album with an intro of pure Cumbia that any Latino would be proud to dance to, complete with the folkloric flutes of Latin America.

The first song sets the fusion stage, more than their last album “Agua pa’ la Tierra.” If anything, the fact that this album is more upbeat and incorporates a different variety of genres, which reflects their feel and personality on stage.

“Have you listened to the album yet? It’s better than a cup of coffee in the morning. It makes me want to dance,” said a recent listener and fan of the band, Amor Montes de Oca of Arte Y Vida Chicago, one of the main sponsors of the Flamenco Festival. Canteca de Macao will be headlining the festival on March 12 at the Double Door.

Infusing the salsa and cha-cha-cha feel into the track titled “Lo mas bello,” dancing is almost inevitable. The song discusses the dedication that Anita Saboya Hernandez, the lead vocalist, maintained through the hard times, finding the most beautiful in every situation.

“This song talks about what I felt when I realized that I couldn’t surrender from all of the opportunities that Canteca de Macao had; how the whole band was at the bottom of the barrel yet pushing forward; of the capability to reinvent and be reborn,” she said in a blog post. “It talks about all of the beauty that at the moment had been hidden.”
