When it comes to entertainment, a city as diverse as Chicago offers so many options that it’s sometimes difficult to pinpoint, for example, the exact location of your next musical venture. For such conundrums there’s only one choice: ask the experts! On this occasion, we’ve asked an assortment of Chicago’s finest musicians to help us choose a venue where music makes a difference to them, which in turn will make for an almost guaranteed enjoyable time for all of us.
Singer-songwriter Ivana Salipur, known to her music fans as Anavi, favors the Chicago Blues Center, Kingston Mines, for “its great music and atmosphere.” Established in 1968, Kingston Mines is a musician’s first choice when it comes to the city’s personal interpretation of the genre, “reflecting its bustling electric urban surroundings.” Kingston Mines is located at 2548 N. Halsted and is open seven days a week for those 21 and over. You can find Salipur on any given night, singing her heart out at The Joynt.
Fyodor Sahknovski, instrumentalist for post-punk, subverted pop band Radiant Devices enjoys music at Subterranean.
“On any given night you can see hip-hop, punk, rock, experimental kinds of music, pop, what have you, in a cool atmosphere with good sound... and almost always affordable!”he said. With an envied address in the heart of Wicker Park, and a double venue advantage -downstairs features an intimate lounge; while the upstairs concert space includes a ballroom view from its surrounding balcony- the music hub features live performances almost every night of the week. You can find it at 2011 W. North Ave. also 21 and over. Radiant Devices performs at Double Door, February 23.
