NHCSL Calls Upon Further Investigation on the Crimes Committed Towards the Hispanic Community in East Haven, CT
WASHINGTON, Jan. 27, 2012 /PRNewswire-HISPANIC PR WIRE/ -- After federal investigation led authorities to the arrest of four police officers and by comments made by Mayor Joseph Maturo, Jr. in East Haven, Connecticut, The National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL) once again stands firm in opposing any negative rhetoric or actions against the Hispanic community.
NHCSL President, State Representative Minnie Gonzalez of Connecticut, issued the following statement in response to the recent federal arrests of the police officers responsible for assaulting and terrorizing the Hispanic community:
"The NHCSL applauds the government's actions and urges for a full and thorough review of all evidence connected with the crimes in question. It is disheartening to view the lack of reaction, insensitivity and absence of administrative oversight by Mayor Joseph Maturo, Jr. In addition, we urge the US Department of Justice and the US Attorney's office to further investigate instances of discrimination and unlawful use of force by police officers not only in East Haven but in other cities. This kind of corruption must be pulled out from the root to restore the reputation of our brave men and women in law enforcement."
NHCSL believe that Mayor Joseph Maturo, Jr.'s initial reaction to the arrest, lack of effective oversight over the police force and the reinstatement of the police chief constitutes a dangerous pattern of behavior that must be investigated. A review of any involvement by the Mayor should take place post haste. The voters of East Haven, Connecticut deserve to know the full truth from Mayor Joseph Maturo, Jr.
